Plantar Warts

What is a Plantar Wart?

A wart is a small growth on the skin that develops when the skin is infected by a virus. There are 2 types of plantar warts.
  • Solitary wart- a single wart. It often increases in size and multiples forming additional satellite warts.
  • Mosaic warts- a cluster of several small warts growing closely together in one area.
Plantar warts are caused by direct contact with HPV. Typically the plantar wart virus is acquired in public places where people go barefoot (Locker rooms, swimming pools, and public showers).

Symptoms of plantar warts may include:
  • Pain- Plantar warts usually hurt during walking and standing.
  • Tiny black dots- Dried blood contained in the infected capillaries (tiny blood vessels) These often appear on the surface of the wart.
  • Thickened skin-  Plantar warts often resemble a callous because of the tough thick tissue.

There are many home remedies for plantar wart treatment. We will first try topical removal. If that does not work, we can then proceed to surgical options.
