Ankle Sprain

An ankle sprain is an injury to one or more ligaments in the ankle, usually on the outside of the ankle. Ankle sprains are caused from a fall, a sudden twist, or a blow that forces the ankle joint out of its normal position.

Symptoms of an ankle sprain include:
  • Pain or soreness
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Difficulty walking
  • Stiffness in the joint

It is important to immediately begin using R.I.C.E (rest, ice, compression, elevation), this is to help with swelling, pain, and further injury. An ankle sprain should be evaluated and treated promptly. An untreated ankle sprain can lead to chronic ankle instability. Rehabilitation of an ankle sprain is important. If no rehabilitation is done the ankle may be less likely to heal properly.
